Music of the 2000's - The Clientele - Suburban Light

The Clientele - Suburban Light (2000)
It is simply one of the most beautifully crafted albums of the decade. Dream-pop at it's finest. A magical album. If a single album could describe a cool, misty fall night, this would be the album.
I can't count the number of times I've listened to this album over the years. From the floor of my old, just-moved-in condo to Central Park the album still moves me. Fantastic lyrics, well mixed vocal/instrumental levels and wonderful musician ship shape this blissfully melancholy album.
If you like '90's-era bands like Ride, The Verve, Gene or The Ocean Blue, the you'll find this band right up your alley.

Music of the 2000s: Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (2000)

It's been a couple of weeks, so time to jump back into this music series ...
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (2000)
I take pride in trying to keep my CDs, Records and Tapes in as close to like-new condition as possible. So when something happens, like the little plastic hinge on a CD case breaks off, it annoys me. There's only one CD case that is in shambles - broken hinge, cracked plastic, pieces miss from breaking off - a mess. It also is one of my favorite CDs of the decade.
It was probably 1998 or 1999 when I first ran across Whiskeytown, so when Ryan Adams went solo in 2000, I was interested to see how he would fair as a solo artist. Rarely do the solo albums of artists whose group had success and acclaim match or exceed the level of success of their previous endeavor. Rarely doesn't mean never for a reason.
Beginning with a debate around Morrissey, Heartbreaker combines the all the wonderful talents and traits of Adams in what some believe is his best album - including those with Whiskeytown. With songs that range from stripped down and heart-wrenching to soulful but rocking, Adams laid the ground work for a prolific decade of recording.

I Have Finally Given In
I have steadfastly fought to maintain DJdc's status as a Web site - not a blog - but my inability to code the main page to my liking combined with my want to update remotely led me to this cop-out option.
I hope this is only temporary. I hate how this format prevents me from featuring things like Jon Wolf's Monthly Playlists and the recent Dent May Interview but at least for the next few days this is the new reality.
So if you read this site I really want and need you feedback. If you don't want to leave a comment then e-mail your thoughts, ideas or solutions about what you think I should do because I could use the advice.
With the site's three year anniversary only a month away I only have a month to figure things out.
Thanks in advance,
Chuck

"We recorded the album in a punk-as-fuck two weeks in Salem, Oregon," explains lead singer Eddie Argos. "I don't always enjoy the recording process - all that fiddling with guitars and drum sounds waiting for my turn to 'sing'. This time though, we did it just right. We spent a day getting the sound of the instruments perfect, then with all of us in the same room at the same time, with the amazing Black Francis conducting us, we pressed record, jumped around and played our songs. This is how I always thought albums were made and it's definitely how we're doing it from now on!"

Atlanta Braves Searching for Local Band for PreGame Shows
The Atlanta Braves are looking for bands who think they have what it takes to energize and entertain thousands of fans at Turner Field before a home Braves game in 2009. Country, rock, pop, cover, or original bands can submit their information for review at www.braves.com/bravesbands.
"There is an abundance of great musical talent in our region," said Scott Cunningham, Braves Director of Game Entertainment. "This contest gives us an opportunity to tap into the wealth of talent for our fans to enjoy, while supporting up and coming musicians by providing them a venue and audience at the major league level."
Bands selected to perform before a home game during the 2009 season will receive free tickets for their members to that night's game and a special discount code to pass along to their loyal followers to see them live in action.
One group will be named the "Braves Band of the Year" and win a free suite to the final home game of 2009. The "Band of the Year" will be chosen by the Braves game entertainment staff, who will judge the groups based on combination of factors including crowd participation and enthusiasm.

Music of the 2000's - Blitzen Trapper

Blitzen Trapper - Furr (2008)
As mainstream indie/college rock evolved through the decade it became apparent that 2008 became the year of the folk revival. Along with Fleet Foxes' Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper's Furr were two of the best examples of albums that highlighted this movement.
With Furr, the band tightened their sound slightly from their amazing and stylistically diverse debut album Wild Mountain Nation. Personally, Furr has only gotten better as I've listened to it more and more.
There may have been other albums with more critical acclaim, but is truly an enjoyable album with "God & Suicide" and "Black River Killer" highlighting its 13 tracks.

M.I.A. - Arular (2005)
There was a time when having her single "Galang" on the commercial for the Honda Civic was grounds for the over-exposed label. My, my, how things change.
While M.I.A is nominated for a Grammy for "Paper Planes" off the Kala album in late 2004 (before Arular was officially released) and through almost all of 2005 she was the hottest thing on the dance floor.
Whether it be "Galang" or "Bucky Done Gun" or "10 Dollar" M.I.A. crafted tracks that were a unique blend of electro, hip-hop, dance hall and IDM drove the kids crazy.

DeadJournalist.com's Exclusive Interview: Dent May

From time-to-time an artist comes along who has the uncanny knack of mixing the unique with the popular and ending up with a distinctive sound that is unmistakably their own.
Welcome to the music of Dent May.
May isn't your typical indie-flared musician hailing from New York, Portland or Canada. May isn't even from the southern indie hot spots of Nashville, Atlanta or the tobacco roads of North Carolina. He's is from the land of the Blues, Mississippi.
But before you conjure misconceptions base on geography, erase thoughts of a bluegrass player in overhauls and a straw hat. May is signed to Animal Collective's Paw Track label and was in film school at NYU. He was a sensation at last year's SXSW festival for his showmanship and stage presence. And on February 20, he kicks of his first national tour opening for A.C. Newman of The New Pornographers.
And what of that unique? That would be the ukulele. The instrument native to Hawaii, and known by many from the exploits of 1960's icon Tiny Tim, spent years as more a novelty instrument but has in recent years found favor with musicians such as Zach Condon, Jens Lekman and Patrick Wolf. It is one that May also embraced, so much so, that his band is officially named Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele.
Don't let the guy who sometimes rocks the 1970's era Elton John-esque glasses fool you into thinking he's a one trick pony with his ukulele.
While it is the instrument that takes primary focus on this album it is not an instrument that, in the end, will define him. This is not to discount the seriousness of which he takes the ukulele but to emphasize the range of talents he possesses.
For more information on Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, visit his Web site: DentMay.com or his MySpace page: www.myspace.com/dentmay.
Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele will release their debut LP The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele on February 3, 2009.
DeadJournalist.com brings you this exclusive interview with Dent May of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele.
Your debut album is released tomorrow, February 3. How does it feel to finally have that day upon you? How long did it take you to write and record The Good Feeling Music of Dent May?
DM: It's an enormous relief. I wrote most of the songs within a relatively short period of time. Perhaps it was several months. I had the whole album written with demos recorded long before recording with Rusty, and it's been seven or eight months since we recorded. So I'm pretty psyched to finally have it available for public consumption.
How did you come to work with the other members of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele? What led to the band signing to Paw Tracks, the label formed by Animal Collective?
DM: When I got involved with Paw Tracks, it was a solo project and still is essentially. There have been many lineup changes in my band, but everyone in the band I've been friends with for a long time. Basically, I just recruited friends. A couple of the bandmates on the record can't tour because of their jobs.

There are better recommendations than being compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, I'm not sure what they are, but I'm sure they exist.
Somehow still unsigned, The Rural Alberta Advantage finally received a break when their album Hometowns was picked up by eMusic in late 2008, that allowed them to sneak onto several year-end lists, and hopefully much more attention in 2009.
There's still room on the bandwagon, so if you like what you hear, jump on board:
