Atlanta Music Writers Roundtable 2010, Day 4, Part 1 (7 of 8)
Here we are on the last day of the Atlanta Music Writers Roundtable 2010.
I’m reiterating what has been said by each of the other participates, but this project has been a joy to work on – and it’s been great partnering with these writers.
If anyone is curious, no, we don’t all know each other. Yes, some of us have met – and some are friendly on a day-to-day basis – but overall we are just eight writers tied together by a common bond: the love and appreciation of music.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this series as much as we did putting it together.
If you’ve missed any of the previous post, here’s the rundown of the schedule and sites:
Monday (12/20/2010)
Part 1 – Wholly Roller (Emily Hogan)
Part 2 – Ohmpark (Davy Minor)
Tuesday (12/21/2010)
Part 3 – Latest Disgrace (Moe Castro)
Part 4 – Atlanta’s A-List (Rube Ambler)
Wednesday (12/22/2010)
Part 5 – Little Advances (Denton Poteet)
Part 6 – I’m a Bear! Etc. (Tim Lampe)
Thursday (12/23/2010)
Part 7 – DeadJournalist.com (Chuck Norton)
Part 8 – The Moon and Pluto (Nadia Lelutiu)
In part 7, the group goes to a quick-hit format as we give our opinions on Atlanta’s best venues, promotions and the most underrepresented genre of music.
Rube of Atlanta’s A-List
Best Venue for a Local Show: Variety Playhouse
Favorite Alternative Venue: Drunken Unicorn
Venue with the Best Promotion for shows: The EARL
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: Jazz
Davy of Ohmpark
For the venue picks, I’m just going to say my faves from 2010 were the Goat Farm, 529, Drunken Unicorn, The Earl, and WonderRoot.
Chuck of DeadJournalist.com
Best Venue for a Local Show: Tough call because several have their merits, but Eddie’s Attic seriousness toward music makes it a good choice.
Favorite Alternative Venue: Drunken Unicorn
Venue with the Best Promotion for shows: The Earl
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: Jazz and Blues; but there really isn’t an underground country scene ITP (inside the parameter), is there?
Emily of Wholly Roller
Best Venue(s): The EARL, 529
Best Alternative Venue: WonderRoot
Venue with Best Promotion: The EARL
Underrepresented genre: To the outside world Atlanta, Hotlanta, the ATL, or whatever is all hip-hop, all the time, but we have some real gems of the indie rock persuasion that need some loving, too.
Denton of Little Advances
Best Venue for a Local Show: The Earl
Favorite Alternative Venue: I’d like to see more shows at The Cut
Venue with the Best Promotion for shows: Tie between all venues that aren’t Highland Inn Ballroom or the Music Room
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: More cohesive/visible noise scene would be nice
Nadia of The Moon and Pluto
Best Venue for a Local Show: Drunken Unicorn
Favorite Alternative Venue: Picaflor
Venue with the Best Promotion for shows: The Earl
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: Don’t hear enough of the electronic stuff
Tim of I’m a Bear! Etc.
Best Venue for a Local Show: The Earl
Favorite Alternative Venue: Wonder Root
Venue with the Best Promotion for shows: Drunken Unicorn
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: Bands Channelling the sound of Electric Light Orchestra
Moe of Latest Disgrace
Best Venue for a Local Show: The Earl and 529
Favorite Alternative Venue: WonderRoot
Venue with the Best Promotion for Shows: The Earl
Most Underrepresented Genre in Atlanta: Hardcore punk
Check out the final installment this afternoon on The Moon and Pluto and the look for the complete series on each of our sites.
