Review: Snow Caps – Moonbreak
by Kevin Crawford
Snow Caps – “Moonbroken Heart”
The latest release from Philadelphia-based band Snow Caps is a mainly acoustic collection of songs that offers a variety of relaxing down-tempo melodies paired with soothing vocals. At times, such in the chorus of track “Stretched”, the lead singer’s pitch is reminiscent of indie pop stars Tegan and Sara. The introduction to the song “Roses” accompanied by what sounds like soft wind instruments, you can tell Snow Caps are big fans of Sigur Ros’ song structure.
The whimsical, often times melancholy lyrics sort of leave a bit to be desired. At one point towards the end of “Moldy Bread, the lead vocalist literally states “Tell me I’m an egg plant.” Whether or not there is some deep meaning behind these lines or just something that sounded catchy is up to anyone’s interpretation.
All throughout the 13-track release, short interludes such as “A Way” and “The Prince and the Prince” are placed sporadically as if Snow Caps is sort of trying to fill in gaps before some of their deep cuts. These bring about transitions that are smooth and feel as if they tighten the album up together as a whole.
Moonbreak’s production value is surprisingly notable, capturing every sensual note and key perfectly. There are times in this record you will often feel compelled to sort of zone out, but at its core, it is a well executed album. Essentially it is an acoustic jam session, worth looking into for any fans of the genre.
