Album Review: Secret Colours – Secret Colours / Follow the Drone
January, 18, 2011
By Jamie Charmichael
As if to be transported back in time to a place where psychedelic riffs and the clashing of cymbals melt into the murmuring echo of an at leisure vocalist, the band Secret Colours delivers such a trip to the modern listener. With the release of the full length, self-titled album in August 2010 and the recent release of Follow the Drone EP in January of 2011, the Chicago based band has yet rest.
The full-length LP captures the band’s unique energy and strategically places each song to move and liquefy into the following track, combining sounds of grunge pop, psychedelic rock with a surf-feel overtone. The album keeps true to their signature expressions of sound all while combining faster tracks with slower and evenly dispersing the same amount of energy throughout the album.
Although each track has a similar formula to the band’s nature, from one track to the next seems to hold as a new chapter to Secret Colours’ general development. The track placement has an odd relationship, shifting between high energy to a slower concentration, promoting easy listening. The soft- spoken voice of Tommy Evan is nostalgic and haunting, complimenting the honest nature of the band.
The EP, Follow the Drone is the most recent of the band’s success is a two- track tease of their growth since the full length LP. The first song, entitled “Follow The Drone” is mesmerizing and catchy, with repetition in lyrics and in raw rhythm.
The second track offers a different side of the band entitled, “Lust (Slow)” and retreats to the lingering instrumentals similar in previous successes, such as track thirteen, “Sea” from the full length album, “Lust” is heavy in impact and remains casual in liveliness.
Flourishing from any previous expectation that Secret Colours may have obtained, the two most recent gifts from the five piece success story are a complete satisfaction. Remaining consistent between releases, while growing in sound and performance, Secret Colours is a band worth retreating to when wanting a get away from the norm.
