Album Review: Chalk and Numbers
by Jamie Charmichael
Chalk and Numbers is an aesthetically delicious cocktail made up of two main ingredients: Andrew Pierce providing sweet instrumentals and Sable Yong dashing in some vintage vocals, shaken (not stirred).
The Brooklyn-based band – with their 1960’s retro-inspired sound – released their first EP entitled He Knew on January 23, 2011, introducing their sound to the new year.
The duo marries the already existing sounds of their other bands with Pierce coming from two other projects that value the classic sounds of rock and roll (mainly birthing through the 60’s): The New Rags and Nouvellas. He brought much of the sounds stemming off from The New Rags new hit, “We’ve Gotta Get Out Of Here” and the soul of Nouvellas to this project.
Yong gives the energy and sweetness, while maintaining all of the sass from her other band, Year of the Tiger. She keeps the vocals from both bands distinct and unique.
What separates Chalk and Numbers from bands of a similar vintage is there flexibility between genres and their emphasis on sounding genuine. Thus the musical love child is born.
He Knew is a six-track triumph of true, vintage sound starting with the title-track, “He Knew”. The entire album is energetic and focused – with attention to detail in each song.
My personal favorite is the second track, “I Really Wanna Work This Out”. Its vibe is warm and welcoming and is pleasing for any listener who may aspire for a temporary vacation.
He Knew is available on their Bandcamp page for free. Take advantage of a great opportunity to listen to something fresh.
