I’m two-and-half days into this being a dad thing. Here are a few things that I’ve already learned:
- Coming up with a nickname is hard.
- Sleeping at the hospital is harder.
- Making the drive home from the hospital without your kid is the hardest.
- Knowing your kid is in NICU is hard.
- Seeing him hooked up to monitors and full of tubes is harder.
- Hearing him grunt and groan is the hardest.
- Holding him for the first time was awesome.
- Having him lock onto my finger with the grip of a 10-year-old was awesomer.
- Having the doctor say, “Right now, he’s just pissed off at the world.” and having everyone you know tell you, “takes after his old man” is the awesomest.
- Knowing so many people care about how he’s doing is awesome.
- Knowing he’s getting good care is awesomer.
- Knowing he’s a tough son-of-a-bitch is awesomest.
My wife’s been a trooper. It was a tough delivery and its been a huge roller coaster of emotions for her. But I think she was born to do this mom thing. Now if we can just get him home …
Its a good thing this song has been on heavy rotation, because it’s been the highlight of a number of my drives so far.

congratulations! I hope he and your wife continue to get better!
