A quick site update (again as my first attempt failed): because of an issue with WordPress I am unable to access DeadJournalist via a browser to edit or update the site. I will be trying to resolve the issue again tomorrow night.

I’m not sure if the issue can be resolved without risk to the content. If everything is back in working order, updates will start again this weekend. If not, not sure what will happen.

In the meantime I’m only able to update via iPhone which is a horrible option but the only one I have right now.

Thanks for understanding.

My Morning Jacket, Neko Case and Phosphorescent have announced a performance on August 19, 2011 to benefit United Way of West Alabama. The performance will be held at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater in Tuscaloosa, AL, and will benefit the victims of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes. Tickets go on sale July 17, 2011.

Statement from artists are below.

Statement from My Morning Jacket’s Jim James:

“My Morning Jacket is honored to be given an opportunity to do our part in helping the folks of Tuscaloosa cope with this tragedy and for us, it is a reminder of just how close we all are as people and how important it is for us to come together in times of trouble. Life is a crazy journey and you never know what the next day may bring. We all need each other to help make it thru.”

Statement from Neko Case:

“When I saw footage of the tornado destruction my heart broke. But I’m also SO inspired by all the coverage of people helping each other though the tragedy, be it selfless acts of bravery or just sending what little they can. I want to help too. Humans are amazing creatures when we stick together! I love us! ”

Statement from Phosphorescent:

Phosphorescent was on tour when the news reached me about the Alabama tornados. Alabama is my home state and we were in San Francisco and it was two full days of worry before I could get through on the phone lines and reach my family. I am very lucky to have found out that they were all ok and it is devastating to think of all the people who weren’t as lucky. Since then I have been racking my brain to find a way to help or to set up a benefit or figure out anything we could do. It means the world to me that the My Morning Jacket boys were thinking along the same lines and that they reached out to Phosphorescent and that we can get down there to Tuscaloosa and lend a hand. Alabama, this one’s for you.

Record Store Day 2011 is next Saturday, April 16. There are dozens of special releases for this day only so make sure an visit your local independent record store and show your support.

“Record stores are the hippest libraries. In these tired ole days of homogenized entertainment, where so much of the art of our society is culminated, dumbed-down and mass produced, there is a shining jewel in the rise of the indy record stores. Going to a record shop for me is like a little treasure hunt no one can take you on but yourself. It’s fun to look around and see the other shoppers too…totally entrenched in their own adventure, anticipating the reward of heart wrenching, soul filling, joy making music that might just be a bin or a flip away.”

“As a Little Five Points alumni of 11 years, back in the 1900′s, I used to live behind Criminal Records on a street called Colquitt in an apartment with a rotating cast of roommate’s girlfriends. I would be on the road about 300 days out of the year, and home on most Mondays and Tuesdays. Those were my days to go get cultured on new and exciting music, and buy my dimebag habit of U.K. Magazines. The thing is, I would have never gotten this kind of education or variety of pop culture fun from a supermarket that sells Shakira records.

Don’t get me wrong. My day job pays me well for making records for those kinds of folks, but I don’t wanna listen to it. I mean, would you wanna eat donuts for dinner, if you made them all day in a factory? Nope. Same with music. Thanks Eric …”
