Savannah Stopover 2012

Savannah Stopover, the pre-SXSW festival being held in Savannah from March 7-10, 2012, has announced the initial line-up. Organizers expect at least 70 bands to perform during the four-day showcase held in the city’s Historic District.

Among the band confirmed are: The War on Drugs, The Love Language, Caveman, Grimes, Prince Rama, Jukebox The Ghost, Oberhofer, The Men, Little Tybee, Zambri, Quilt, The Knocks, Royal Baths, DIVE, Born Gold, Turbo Fruits, Pond, Eternal Summers, The Big Sleep, Savoir Adore, Deleted Scenes, Secret Mountains, Delicate Steve, Grandchildren, Dinousaur Feathers, Cheyenne Marie Mize, Spanish Prisoners, Sleepy Vikings, Country Mice, Idiot Glee, Hooded Fang, Janka Nabay, Jon Lindsay, The Loom, The Minutes, The Suzan, Tops, River Whyless, Young Empires, and Christ,Lord.

The Tetrafol device

Fol Chen, in collaboration with Monome and The Machine Project, has announced the availability of the limited-edition Tetrafol, “a hand-held tangible electronic sound toy.” The Fol Chen track “So Good” is included with the Tetrafol and can be streamed below.

According to the press release, the Tetrafol is:

Circuits enclosed by a wooden tetrahedron detect orientation and motion-gestures to modify the playback of a collection of Fol Chen’s micro-compositions, allowing the user to explore sound through physical manipulation. The battery-powered device has its own internal speaker but can additionally be hooked up to a headphone or amplifier. The circuit and firmware are based on open-source hardware and is itself published as open-source, allowing anyone interested to learn about its deepest inner-workings.

The device will come pre-loaded with the sounds Fol Chen created for new track “So Good”, allowing people to create their own take on the song, but users will be able to upload their own music to the device for manipulation as well.

Only 100 of the hand-constructed Tetrafols will be produced.

Glen Campbell

Glen Campbell is on his farewell tour, supporting what will be his final album. The long-time country star announced he is suffering from Alzheimer’s. At this week’s CMA Awards, there was a tribute to Campbell by Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley.

Prior to his success as a Country singer, he was a guitar player for the Beach Boys.

Garbage

The official release is several weeks old – I’m behind – but I could let the opportunity slip to pass along the word that one of my favorite bands from the ’90′s, Garbage, have reformed and will be releasing a new album in Spring 2012.

The yet-to-be-named album will be the band’s fifth, and the first in seven years.

I’m not sure if the issue can be resolved without risk to the content. If everything is back in working order, updates will start again this weekend. If not, not sure what will happen.

In the meantime I’m only able to update via iPhone which is a horrible option but the only one I have right now.

Magic is Science

Last year, I was happy to be part of two successful Magic is Science art shows in Atlanta. Tomorrow – Saturday, October 1, 2011 – I’m pleased to announce I will be part of it yet again.

Moogfest 2011

Moogfest 2011 is taking place on October 28-30, 2011 in Asheville, NC, the headquarts of Moog Music and adopted home town of Bob Moog. The event will feature an exhibition of Brian Eno’s 77 Million Paintings and he will be doing a the event “Illustrated Talk“.

Along with Eno, the three-day event has line-up of confirmed artist that reads like a who’s who of electronic musicians. From legendary acts like The Flaming Lips and Suicide to the hottest current acts like The Antlers and M83 to up-and-comers like CANT and Austra, it is mind-blowing the quality of artists in attendance for the festival.

California for Alabama Benefit

Update: Jennifer Blake will be on SIRIUS RADIO tomorrow (August 2, 2011) on Jamie Kaler’s show at 3PM Pacific/6pm Eastern, on Blue Collar Radio, channel 97 discussing the California for Alabama Benefit show.

On August 3, 2011, MBAR in Los Angeles will host California for Alabama Benefit – a benefit for the victims of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes that killed hundreds and left thousands homeless or with significant damage.

Organized by Jennifer Blake, an Alabama-native living in Los Angeles, the event features comedian and author Greg Behrendt (The Greg Behrendt Show, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’), actor and comedian Chris D’elia (Workaholics, Whitney), comedian Matt Braunger (Mad TV), actor and comedian Jamie Kaler (My Boys, Robot Chicken) as well as fellow actor/comedians Drew Droege, Matt Knudsen and Sean Carriga.

Musical acts scheduled to appear include Travis Howard and Bobby Joyner.

Along with the performances, there will be also be an auction of music, movie and television memorabilia (including Twilight Zone items) and tickets to an upcoming Mike Doughty concert.

My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket, Neko Case and Phosphorescent have announced a performance on August 19, 2011 to benefit United Way of West Alabama. The performance will be held at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater in Tuscaloosa, AL, and will benefit the victims of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes. Tickets go on sale July 17, 2011.

Phosphorescent was on tour when the news reached me about the Alabama tornados. Alabama is my home state and we were in San Francisco and it was two full days of worry before I could get through on the phone lines and reach my family. I am very lucky to have found out that they were all ok and it is devastating to think of all the people who weren’t as lucky. Since then I have been racking my brain to find a way to help or to set up a benefit or figure out anything we could do. It means the world to me that the My Morning Jacket boys were thinking along the same lines and that they reached out to Phosphorescent and that we can get down there to Tuscaloosa and lend a hand. Alabama, this one’s for you.

Eric Clapton & John Mayall – Lonely Years

Who Took The Bomp? Le Tigre On Tour

The long-awaited Le Tigre film, ‘Who Took the Bomp? Le Tigre On Tour’, will be released on DVD on June 7, 2011. The film chronicles the band’s This Island tour across four continents and 10 countries.

The film will debut at SXSW and will also be shown in New York.

Record Store Day

Record Store Day 2011 is set for Saturday, April 16. Save up a few extra $20′s and make sure to hit up your favorite neighborhood independent records store for exclusives, new music or some previously enjoyed items.

Oryx and Crake

One of Atlanta’s best up-and-coming collectives, Oryx and Crake have been added to the bill for the January 15, 2011 show at The Earl headlined by The Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger (featuring Sean Lennon). Also appearing will be Julianna Barwick.

According to the Rebekah Goode-Peoples, Oryx and Crake will be playing a parred down acoustic set that will include two new songs and a cover of Nina Simone’s “Lilac Wine”.
