HIGHLY REC’D – THE MONTHLY MIXTAPE
Because good music is a right, not a privilege.
by: Jon Wolf

Editor’s Note: Sadly, Jon Wolf has decided to end the Highly Rec’d Mixtape. We’re sad to see him go but proud to have been able to bring his monthly mixtapes to you for the last three years. Thanks for all the music, Jon. We’ll miss your pieces but you always have a home if you decide you just can’t stay away. – Chuck

And THAT, Ladies and Gentlemen, was the last year of Highly Rec’d.

Real life has finally infringed enough to prevent me from dedicating the time necessary to maintaining the high standards I demand of my beloved pointless mixtapes.

HR’d has been a huge part of my life, a true passion, and I would rather end strong than try to force my way through a year without the same enthusiasm.

I think the few thousand new best friends I have made over the past five years(!) would call me out me if I tried to pass off anything less.

Thank you to all the readers and all the bands that participated and were truly into it.

So I leave the Internet with years of great music that you do not have to convince yourself that you like, as well as an obnoxious amount of superfluous exclamation points, to rediscover as it travels around the ether.

Thanks for playing, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did,

Jon

(And since I have a music problem and could not prevent myself from compiling one last mix, here is a greatest hits/personal favorites list with a few new tracks folded in to carry you into the new year, enjoy!)

Brent Smith looks forward to the Fare Soldi Carpi Sonne Mix every year. The 2011 version is out now, so take a look and a listen in the latest version of "It Came From The Cloud".

I don’t know if I have ever heard an electro masterpiece start out with a beat box. Fari Soldi then takes no time dropping into their “Yo! Raps Remix” of Mothers of Charleston song “Taxi Driver“. From Beat Box to Hip Hop to Frisco Disco they get things started fast and furious. They refuse to take the foot off the throttle for the next 40 minutes.

I look forward to the Fare Soldi Carpi Sonne Mix every year. Its always jammed packed with their completely original and unique remixes. They also feature the hottest sounds out right now.

Case and point is the Roy Booge Brukup of Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time”. “Remember the Time” is probably my least favorite Michael Jackson song. Something about the video leaves a bad taste in my mouth still many years later. I can’t get the horrible image of Michael dancing around as an pharaoh out of my head. But when they dropped this track, I literally was frozen in disbelief. Not only was it good but it fit Fare Soldi’s crazy ass sound perfectly.

Capri Sonne 2011 picks up right where they left off last year. If you start listening in your cubical make sure your co-workers are not around. Trust me, I have gotten more than one funny look as I fidgeted uncontrollably in my seat as Fare Soldi pumped through my headphones. I can’t wait to get in my car, roll down the windows, turn it up, and enjoy the open rode. I hope you enjoy this beauty of a mixtape as much I have in the past 24 hours.

Editor’s Note: Los Angeles-based rapper Osa Virtuoso has provided DeadJournalist.com an exclusive, first-person view into the process behind his unique mixtape The Classics. With this continuing series of artist Op-Ed’s we continue to bring you the undiluted voice of the artist the best way possible: directly from the source.

On Creating The Classics Mixtape
by Osa Virtuoso

The Classics came about from listening to a radio station, actually. I’ve always loved soulful/pop hits from back in the day, but it wasn’t until one afternoon listening that the idea came about. I loved the sound so much that I thought, why not recreate it.

I knew that there had to be a market of people that loved these classic tracks as much as I did, and wouldn’t mind hearing it with a new twist. So I looked it up, noticed no one had done it before, and got to work.

The first one I did was The Spinners, “Take Your Time.” Then it was The Jackson Five, “Never Can Say Goodbye,” and Phil Collins, “In The Air”. My friend Giovanni did the Otis interludes. I called him up, he came by the studio the same day and knocked it out effortlessly.

He’s a comedian/actor, and I really love the way he works. It was literally one take, no mistakes, and I chopped it up into a few different interludes and placed them where I saw fit. I did the same thing with the original songs. Chopped them up, made beats and choruses.

I didn’t actually grow up listening to these songs and artists because I was too young. But, I certainly remember hearing them. Maybe not on my own merit, but from parents, commercials, radio, etc. I’m just happy to know that people are enjoying the mixtape as much as I did putting it together.

My objective is to entertain, educate, and inspire at the best of my ability. I hope to attain the same success with my debut album this fall.

Brent Smith feels bad for dissing his brother's music a decade ago. But Anoraak has now put the shoe on the other foot.

Anoraak

This fantastic mixtape from Anoraak is right in my wheel house of music. When I was younger, I used to think my brother’s taste in House music was so lame. It was “old guy” electronic music for me. I used to think, what’s with all these vocals and two step beats? At that time I was listening to furious drum and bass. The grimier the bass lines and the faster the beats; the better. Talk about polar opposites! This House music was for old people…

Fast forward ten years and now I am that old guy and feel bad for dissing my brother.

So what exactly am I talking about and what does it have to do with this mixtape. Let me first say that this mixtape is not house music centered but features some smooth vocals. It starts out fairly poppy with some crossover electronic music. Anoraak then progress into some serious dance music of the disco/house/electro variety to finish it off. These types of tracks suit my old man ears I guess. The most complimentary thing I could say is if I were to make a mixtape, these are the types of tracks I would play. It has been on repeat for the last three weeks and I hope you check it out …

Anoraak is an electronic/pop artist from France with two great full length albums under his belt. DJing isn’t his main stick but he does an really awesome job putting this mixtape together.
