11 October 2006 - EXCLUSIVE
Interview: 120 Days One of the newest bands on the influential US label, Vice Recording, is 120 Days, a self-described Kraut-techno band from Norway. The band’s self-titled debut, 120 Days, was released on October 10 in the US. 120 Days will launch its first North American tour on October 26 in Toronto, with its first US show in Philadelphia on October 28. The band will play two shows in London and one in Reykjavik while crossing the pond. The band is comprised of Ådne Meisfjord (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Kjetil Ovesen (synthesizers), Arne Stöy Kvalvik (drum machine, effects) and Jonas Dahl (bass). For more information on 120 Days, visit their Web site at www.120days.no or their MySpace.com page at www.myspace.com/120days. DeadJournalist.com brings you this exclusive interview with Kjetil Ovesen of 120 Days. What is the background of the band? How long have you been together? KO: We formed the band September 2001 in a small town called Kristinasund. This town didn’t have a scene at all so we packed up and went to Oslo. Bigger town, bigger scene. For someone who hasn’t heard the band, how would you describe your sound? KO: We listen to a lot of Krautrock from the 70’s like Neu! and Kraftwerk. Our music can be anything from 15-minute drone-based jams to small confetti 4 minute pop-techno songs. How important was the move to Oslo and signing with Norway’s Smalltown Supersound label in the band’s success? KO: Smalltown Supersound is a great label. Lots of fantastic artists like Lindstroem, Mental Overdrive, Bjoern Torske, Tussle and Jaga Jazzist. It’s all good! The perfect label for us. How did the band’s signing with the US label Vice Recordings come about? KO: At first they found some demo songs on our website and liked them enough to buy our EP’s. They flew to Norway to catch us live and that was when we started talking about releasing an album together. That was almost two years ago, and now our album is ready to hit the stores. When will the band’s debut LP be released? KO: The date is not confirmed but it shouldn’t be too long after the album release. Will your upcoming US tour be the band’s first American tour? KO: Yeah! Some of us haven’t even set foot in America yet. Hope you guys feel like dancing to Kraut-techno! What do you feel most connects you with your audience? KO: When people are dancing I know they’ve got the picture. As a performer, what is your favorite part of playing live shows? KO: Watching people dance. Who influenced you most as a musician? KO: It’s impossible for me to name one so here’s a few. Neu!, Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Spacemen 3, Salvador Dali andSteve Reich. What were you listening to 10 years ago? KO: Everything from Velvet Underground to Rage Against the Machine.
